India Habitat Centre hosts Collegiate Theatre and Music Festival 2026

The India Habitat Centre (IHC) is set to host the Collegiate Theatre and Music Festival 2026, bringing together student performers from across institutions in a celebration of emerging creative talent.

Envisioned as more than just a stage for performances, the festival aims to create a space where young actors, directors, writers, and musicians can experiment, collaborate, and present their work to wider audiences. This year, the festival has received over 170 proposals from colleges and student groups, signalling strong participation and interest from the student community.

The festival also draws inspiration from the legacy of noted Kathak exponents Nalini Asthana and Kamalini Asthana, whose contribution to Indian classical dance continues to influence young practitioners.

Commenting on the initiative, K. G. Suresh, Director of IHC, said the festival is designed as a platform where students can take ownership of their creative expression.

He noted that the strong response this year reflects the enthusiasm and creative energy among young people. Emphasising the role of performing arts, he added that theatre serves not only as entertainment but also as a medium that can shape perspectives and deepen understanding.

Drawing from his own experience with student theatre, Suresh highlighted how engagement with the arts can influence personal and creative growth. He also pointed to the complementary role of music, describing it as a discipline that fosters connection and continuity.

Looking ahead, IHC plans to expand the scale of the festival to include more institutions and drama societies, with the aim of making it a more inclusive collegiate platform.

The festival will feature a curated line-up of theatre and music performances, showcasing a range of student-led work. It is designed to encourage dialogue, collaboration, and artistic exploration, while offering audiences an engaging cultural experience.
